Veil of Secrets by Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel Thomas Nelson ISBN 978-1-4016-8867-7

Veil of Secrets, by Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel, takes the reader inside the intricacies of a presidential political campaign where no secret is safe. The relationships between the characters are intriguing. Melanie and Will Connors, a “power couple,” are key players in the campaign. Will acts as the strategist and Melanie, who was raised in the political arena, brings to the table her experience. However, their marriage is troubled and on the verge of collapse. Will tells her that if she doesn’t agree to marriage counseling he will seek a divorce. Desperate to save her marriage, Melanie agrees to the counseling. The authors deftly guide the reader through the intensely personal process. Layer by layer they scrutinize their marriage. The process is painful and it remains to be seen if the marriage will survive.
There is a great deal more to this novel. Will’s sister is a campaign staffer with issues of her own. The Connors’ teenage daughter is about to travel a dangerous path. Suddenly, the country’s communication systems are compromised and chaos results. No matter what, the campaign goes on as do the stories of the interesting characters.
I found this to be a believable story. Loyalties and morals are questioned. The characters have flaws and they know it, but it is the way they deal with their shortcomings that makes this book worth reading.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
