The Secret To Hummingbird Cake, a novel by Celeste Fletcher McHale, takes place in a small Louisiana town. Carrigan, Laine and Ella Rae have been best friends most of their lives and they expected that to be the case for many more years. However, that is about to change when one of them becomes seriously ill.
When the story opens Carrigan’s marriage has hit a rough patch and she doesn’t know what to do about it. Her dear friends support her, but it may not be enough to get her through. Suddenly, her marriage problems take a back seat when the unthinkable happens and the women have to face a new reality.
Even though the dialogue is often outright funny, this is a meaningful and serious story. The well developed characters are fascinating to follow as they experience raw emotions and new realizations. Carrigan, especially, is forced to look inward and to come to grips with what matters.
I found this to be a beautifully written and powerful novel about friendship. It is a memorable story about unshakeable love, identity , loyalty and respect. Highly recommended.
