In The Memory of You, a novel by Catherine West, we learn early on that the characters have emotional baggage and that families are fractured. The story takes place in the present, but the past plays an important role. Natalie Mitchell is plagued by nightmares, panic attacks and guilt as the result of a tragedy that occurred thirteen years ago while at her grandparents Sonoma winery. She has not seen her grandfather in years, but he is now requesting she visit. Even though she is apprehensive, she agrees to return there and to evaluate if the winery should remain open. Her childhood friend, Tanner Collins, is now working at the winery and views Natalie as a threat. In addition, his life has not been without disappointments and sadness. The one thing they have in common is that they both have their own secrets and anguishes. Can two struggling people find a way to help each other find peace?
This a multilayered story. All the characters have their own story and the author skillfully weaves them together. Each of them has to face their past in order to move forward with an ultimate goal of achieving forgiveness and strength to face the future.
I found this to be a beautifully written and emotion packed story. It is thought provoking and memorable. Highly recommended.
