Ascension of the Larks, a novel by Rachel Linden, introduces Magdalena (Maggie) Henry as the protagonist. On the surface it appears Maggie has an exciting life. She is a successful photographer who travels the world. Hers is a life of freedom and no commitments. One phone call from her friend, Lena, changes her world entirely. Lena’s husband, Marco, died as the result of an accident. Friends since college and the only people Maggie considers family, Maggie rushes to be with Lena and her children at their home on an island in the Pacific Northwest. Once there, Maggie is thrust into a role she is totally unprepared for. Complicated by the fact that she had loved Marco even before he married Lena and what she discovers after his death, Maggie finds herself trying to cope. With Marco’s death Maggie has to accept he is permanently gone from all their lives, but his secrets survive him. Can she come to grips with a new reality?
The author brings to the readers a well crafted novel that seamlessly combines the past and present lives of the characters. This is a story of introspection and hope. It is well worth reading. Highly recommended.
