Melisande by Phillipa Lodge; The Wild Rose Press ISBN 978-1-5092-1517-1

Melisande, by Phillipa Lodge, is set in France. Lucas de Granville has been sent by his godfather, a comte, to the slums on a mission. Lucas is to find the comte’s illegitimate daughter, Melisande , and bring her back to Versailles as he plans to use her to improve his stature. Not knowing what to expect, but hoping her father will give her an allowance she can share with her mother and brother, she accompanies Lucas to her new home. Sadly, even though all Melisande has known is a life of poverty, life with her father is worse. Even though she now has enough food, clean shelter and clothes it does not negate the horrid treatment she receives from her father. Her future looks even worse than her past. Is Lucas able to help her? This is a love story that includes dangerous people, secrets, witchcraft and intrigue. There are back stories and twists and turns that help to create an engrossing and well told tale. Highly recommended.
