The Legacy, by Michael Phillips, is the third novel of his Secrets of the Shetlands series. While it can be read as a stand alone book, I highly recommend reading the first two books, The Inheritance and The Cottage, as they are excellent.
Much of this book is set in Whales Reef which is in the Shetlands. Loni Ford, an American, is now an important person in Whales Reef as she has inherited property, a title and, perhaps most important, a legacy. She questions where she belongs, all the while developing stronger and stronger feelings for the population of Whales Reef. Even though she has found romance on the island there is the question of logistics. How does she proceed?
Meticulously, this family saga is presented in different time lines, sometimes using a series of letters and journals. Loni’s story is but one of those told. The secondary characters are an interesting group, as are their stories. They blend into the narrative perfectly. This is a story of searching for one’s identity, personal growth, faith and family. The Legacy is a beautifully told and meaningful story. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
